When natural gas became avaiable in 1922, the gas plant was placed on stadby. In 1943 till 1947 the facilities were converted to produce much needed butadiene for the US Goverment war effort. Butadiene is a raw material for synthetic rubber.
Most of the facilities were demolished in 1952 and the property was sold and redeveloped for other industrial and commercial activities. Remedial and site cleanup began in 1998 and continue through the present.
