This Manufactured Gas Plant started operations in 1874 and used both coal-based processes and oil-based processes.

When natural gas became available in 1922, the gas plant was placed on standby. In 1943 till 1947 the facilities were converted to produce much needed butadiene for the US Government war effort. Butadiene is a raw material for synthetic rubber.

Most of the facilities were demolished in 1952 and the property was sold and redeveloped for other industrial and commercial activities. Remedial and site cleanup began in 1998 and continue through the present.
