Located in Silver Lake, the Avenal Cooperative Housing Project was funded by ten families who each invested approximately $11,000 in 1946. Their intent was to build a shared cooperative. After purchasing the gently down sloping property near the Rowena Reservoir, Gregory Ain was retained as the architect due to his
reputation for creating affordable Modern residential designs.
Each of the ten three bedrooms homes was built on angles and staggered in order to maximize privacy both inside the home and outside patio.
In 1991 the owners converted the property into condominiums.
