The land to build the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels was purchased in December 1996 and the announcement of the new site was made in 1996 by Cardinal Roger Mahony. The cost of the 5.5 acres was $10.85 million and was located between the Hollywood Freeway and Temple Street. The budget of $150 million was exceeded due to donations that poured in with the final cost being $190 million.
There is a mausoleum located at the lower level which contains 1,270 crypts and 4,746 columbarium niches for burials. All funds derived from the sale of memorials and burials support the endowment fund for future Cathedral maintenance and projects.
