The Gamble House was designed by architects Green & Green in 1908. It was commissioned by David and Mary Gamble, members of the Procter & Gamble company as a retirement residence.

After the approval of the final plans, in February 1908, construction began in March. Under the careful watch of both the architects and the owners, the house was completed within ten months and furnished by the summer of 1910. In 1966 after the last of the Gamble family lived in the home, The Gamble House was deeded to the city of Pasadena and the University of Southern California School of Architecture.
