Lillian Disney widow of Walt Disney, donated $50 million in 1987 towards the more than $84 million she would donate to help build the Disney Hall. Plagued by the real estate depression and cost overruns, the final Frank Gehry designed project was completed for more than $274 million in 2003.
Construction was started in 1992 with the underground garage which cost more than $110 million to build. The Walt Disney Company donated $25 million with the fundraising being led by Eli Broad and Mayor Richard Riordan. The final design was changed to a less expensive metal skin to lower the building costs.
